When's the Best Time for Stucco Replacement in Ogden?

You're looking at your stucco, maybe it's cracking, bulging, or just looking tired. You know it's time for a replacement, but when's the best time to actually get it done here in Ogden? From my experience, and after years working on homes from the East Bench to West Haven, it really boils down to avoiding the extremes.

Spring and fall are usually your best bets. The temperatures are milder, which means the stucco can cure properly without getting too hot too fast, or freezing before it's set. We're talking about consistent temperatures, ideally between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If it's too hot, the water in the mix evaporates too quickly, leading to shrinkage cracks. Too cold, and the water can freeze before the stucco sets, which completely messes with its strength and adhesion. You don't want that.

Summer can work, especially if we get a stretch of moderate days, but those scorching 95-degree-plus weeks we often see in July and August can be tough. We might have to adjust our schedule or use special additives to slow the cure. Winter? Forget about it for full replacements. The ground's often frozen, and the daily temperatures rarely stay above freezing long enough for proper application and curing. We're talking about a material that needs specific conditions to perform its best, and winter just doesn't offer them here in Northern Utah.

How Ogden's Weather Affects Stucco Work

Ogden's got its own unique weather patterns, right? We get those hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. This isn't just about comfort for us working; it directly impacts the quality of your stucco job.

Humidity plays a role too. Too dry, and it cures too fast. Too humid, and it can take forever to dry, which isn't ideal either. We're always checking the forecast, not just for rain, but for temperature swings and humidity levels. A sudden cold snap after application can ruin a fresh coat. That's why scheduling is so important. We're not just penciling you in; we're planning around the weather to make sure your stucco has the best chance to last.

Wind is another factor. A really windy day can dry out the surface too quickly, leading to problems. It can also blow dust and debris onto a fresh coat, which you definitely don't want. Sometimes, we'll have to pause work or adjust our approach if the wind picks up too much. It's all about making sure the conditions are right for a quality finish.

Protecting Your Stucco Investment Year-Round

Once your new stucco is on, you want it to last, right? It's a big investment, and a little year-round care goes a long way. Here's what I tell folks:

  • Keep an Eye on Drainage: This is huge. Make sure your gutters are clean and directing water away from your foundation. Water pooling around the base of your walls is a stucco killer. The soil around many older Ogden homes, especially in areas like the East Bench, can be clay-heavy and doesn't drain as well, so good guttering and grading are critical.
  • Check for Cracks Annually: Small hairline cracks are normal as a house settles and expands/contracts with temperature changes. But if you see cracks wider than a credit card, or ones that seem to be growing, get them looked at. Water can get in there and cause bigger problems, especially with our freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Trim Landscaping: Keep bushes, trees, and vines from growing directly against your stucco. They hold moisture against the wall and can scratch or damage the surface. Give your stucco some breathing room.
  • Gentle Cleaning: If your stucco gets dirty, usually a garden hose with plain water is enough. For tougher spots, a soft brush and mild detergent work. Don't use a high-pressure washer too close; you can damage the finish.
  • Repairs Promptly: Don't put off small repairs. A little patch now can prevent a major, costly replacement down the road. If you're unsure, give us a call at New Look Stucco Inc. We can come take a look and give you an honest assessment.

Taking care of your stucco isn't rocket science, but it does require a bit of attention. Do these things, and your home will look great for decades to come.
